Introduction

Motivating employees and developing organizational performance is mostly dependent on leadership. In addition to refreshing and moving workers, effective leadership advances a climate of involvement, cooperation, and ongoing development. We will discuss the impact of leadership in fostering employee engagement and its massive influence on organizational performance in this introduction.

According to Armstrong, M. and Taylor, S. (2020), Motivation theory explains the factors that affect goal-directed behavior and therefore influences the approaches used in HRM to enhance engagement(the situation in which people are committed to their work and the organization and are motivated to achieve high levels of performance).

Successful organizations are motivated by moved people, which is largely dependent on effective leadership. Leaders can create a culture of high performance and dedication by motivating, empowering, and engaging their teams. We will discuss the importance of strong leadership in motivating workers and how it significantly affects organizational development.

Armstrong, M. and Taylor, S. (2020) Summarized that Effective leadership plays a critical role in motivating employees. and running organizational performance. By understanding the principles of motivation, leveraging appropriate leadership styles, and implementing strategies to support and empower, employees, leaders can create a culture of engagement, productivity, and excellence within the organization. Ultimately, the synergy between leadership,, employee motivation, and organizational performance is essential for achieving sustainable success in today's dynamic and competitive business environment.

The ‘AMO’ formula as set out by Boxall and Purcell (2003) states that performance is a function of Ability + Motivation + Opportunity to Participate. HRM practices therefore impact on individual performance if they encourage discretionary effort, develop skills, and provide people with the opportunity to perform. (Armstrong (2000) added that The formula provides the basis for developing HR systems that attend to employees’ interests, namely their skill requirements, motivations, and the quality of their jobs.

Armstrong and Taylor (2020), p 260 explain that, Last many decades a number of theories emerged focusing on motivation which complements each other and the main theories focus on “expectancy, goal setting, equity and cognitive evaluation’, that are known as cognitive theories.

Who can be a leader?

Before You are a leader, Success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.

Managing people is the most difficult science but the easiest art. Leadership is perhaps the only profession where performance matters more than anything else. It does not matter how you succeed. If you produce the result, all means are acceptable.

Every field lays down some criteria based on which we know if we are fit to enter that field or not as far as leadership is concerned, there are no clearly defined criteria or attributes that tell us whether we are no clearly defined criteria attributes that tell us whether we are leadership material or not. As a result, everyone believes that he or she can be a leader,

This makes leadership the most deceptive game in the world. The only law for leadership is that there is no law. The only rule that a leader follows is that he follows no rules.

What is Motivation?

The word "MOTIVATION" comes from the word "MOTIVE," which refers to an individual's needs, wants, desires, or drives.(Nancy H. Shanks “n.d” Chapter2 Johns and Bartlett Publisher)

“There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.” btd, (2023).

The term "motivation" describes the internal or external forces that drive people to pursue particular objectives, assignments, or pastimes. Several things, including individual values, beliefs, needs, wants, and outside incentives, can have an impact on it. Behavior's direction, intensity, and persistence are all influenced by motivation.

Different factors can drive people in different ways, such as obtaining rewards, following feelings, meeting basic needs, becoming successful, or getting recognition. recognizing motivation matters in diverse settings such as school, employment, athletics, and self-improvement, since it affects output, contentment, and general health. (summarized content goes here ,Nancy H. Shanks“n.d”Chapter2 Johns and  Bartlett Publisher)

Motivation is a matter of human behavior, influencing how we set and achieve objectives and pursue fulfillment in our personal and professional lives. The behind are some main reasons for why motivation theory is important:

Achieving Goals: Motivation gives one the drive to set up and work toward goals.

Fostering Resilience: Motivation provides a second caught of strength when faced with challenges and disappointments.

Enhancing Performance: People who are motivated usually do better and are more productive.

Empowering Leadership: Proficient leaders recognize the value of motivation in inspiring and helping their groups.

Types of Motivation

·       Intrinsic Motivation

Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan (2017) suggest that Basic Psychological Needs in Motivation, Development, and Wellness

A particular is said to be naturally motivated when their motivation comes from sources other than rewards or outside influences. People who are motivated by internal impulses such as achievement or self-satisfaction are said to be basically motivated. A few examples of intrinsic motivation include hobbies, learning for the sake of knowledge, and connecting in activities that align with one's values and interests.

·       Extrinsic Motivation

Daniel H. Pink (2009) explains that "Drive: The Surprising   Truth About What Motivates Us"

On the other side, extrinsic motivation entails doing something to obtain benefits from outside sources or staying out of trouble. External rewards like money, accolades, grades, or social acceptance serve as the driving forces behind this kind of motivation. Extrinsic rewards have the potential to motivate conduct, but they may not always result in sustained enjoyment or true interest in the activity.

 THEORIES OF MOTIVATION

Motivation is a state of mind, filled with energy and enthusiasm, which drives a person to work in a certain way to achieve desired goals. Motivation is a force that pushes people to work with a high level of commitment and focus, even if things are going against them. Motivation translates into a certain kind of human behavior.  In short, motivation is the driving force behind human actions.

Motivation is a critical factor in determining how people behave and how they work toward their objectives. We have examined the complex interactions between external and internal factors that affect our choices, behaviors, and general well-being through a variety of motivation theories.
